Harpers Ferry Maryland

Fall officially starts one week from today, but today’s cool weather feels like Fall already! Fall is, personally, my favorite time of the year and I’d like to share some of my favorite activities. Enjoy!
Maryland Rennassiance Festival
MD Renn Fest

Revel Grove, located in Crownsville Maryland, boasts a full medieval town complete with jousting, mead, turkey legs and street performers. No tents with plastic tables here folks, but full buildings were everyone looks the part! Great for kids of all ages, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Rock Climbing, face painting, music, massage, feats of dexterity (Ax throwing) and even elephants!
Visit there Facebook Page for up to date information or their website for pricing.

Apple Picking
Apple Picking

Get your hands dirty and get some exercise while you are at it! Apple picking is easy and requires no bending down like berry picking. I did a lot of apple picking with my grandfather when I was little, so I know first hand how much fun this can be for children.

There is an online directory of orchards with an easy to use map to find an orchard near you. Always call ahead before making plans to make sure of the open picking hours. Then, promise an apple pie to the best behaved child, that will get them motivated!

Not every surface requires a pressure washer, especially since our Soft Wash method give a longer lasting clean than standard pressure washing. We treat the organic material on the house as a pest, so we eradicate it! Just because one cannot see the organism growing in the siding crevices, doesn’t mean that it isn’t. Our solution breaks down the dirt and grime and we are able to just rinse it away. The solution will not harm your plants and tends to last longer than standard power washing.  Check out the pictures of houses we’ve cleaned just this year in Easton, a lovely historic town on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.

It’s a great time to buy real estate, but that makes selling your home more of a challenge! To set your property apart from the rest, you’ve got to increase your curb appeal.  Follow these 10 ways to increase your curb appeal and the house will attract more potential buyers:

1. Make sure the exterior is clean

  • Gutters, Roofs, and Walls provide a surface for moss, lichen, algae and fungi to grow. A clean  house will show that you’ve maintained the property and will out shine the competition.

2. Repair Obvious Blemishes

  • Damaged siding, rails, steps, driveways etc. become a project for the new owner. The less problem a potential buyer has to fix, the easier the house will be to sell.

3. Have Green Plants

  • Start watering your lawn to help keep it green – dead plants can be ugly and you want the property to be pretty.

4. Landscaping

  • Landscaping does not have to be a costly endevour. Create soft lines around the angular house with some flowering bushes and plants in contrasting colors. Local greenhouses and box stores will always have sales. Buy in bulk and mix up the plants.

5. Street Visibility

  • If the house cannot be seen from the road, place something pretty out near the for sale sign to draw in potential buyers. A wall of trees is great for privacy, but doesn’t pull people in.

6. Plan Ahead

  • You may not be able to do this improvements by yourself, so hire a professional. They can get the job done a lot quicker than you may be able to and the cost should be worth it. However, if you wait till the last second, the best contractor may not be available and you will either pay more or settle for less with another contractor.

7. Budget for improvements

  • Don’t be surprised when a potential buyer has a condition. Even with all your planning, they may see something you’ve missed. Just like you, the buyer wants to make sure they are getting the most for their money. You may be able to negotiate though, so set aside some extra cash just in case!

8. Find a Great Realtor

  • Pick a realtor you are comfortable with and confident in – just because they may be assertive, doesn’t mean they are the best one for you. A realtor who is willing to explain the selling process, is frank about your property and the market, and provides references will be a better fit. Communication is key!

9. Keep that “For Sale” Sign Standing!

  • Don’t let the sign fall over! If it gets damaged, ask for a new one and always make sure the pamphlets are full. The key here is to make viewing your property as easy as possible. This is all about opportunity!

10. Keep it Simple

  • Don’t go overboard with home improvements – take your realtor’s advice and the right buyer will come along. Everyone has varying standards, so make your choices clean, crisp and boring. The property should have potential for the new buyer, something they can customize to make their own.

Good Luck!

Gutters were intended to collect water from the roof, so a house would not be surrounded by a stream of water creating a small trench in the yard. The problem is they don’t just collect water – they collect leaves, twigs, pollen, seeds, etc.  There are a myriad of gutter protectors out there: guards, helmets and even sponges that are designed to alleviate the need to clean out the gutters on a regular basis.

Dirty gutters, roof, soffits and fascia

The problem remains though – what happens when the metal holes get clogged or the sponges can’t dry out? The gutters clog and water ends up backing up into the roof, fascia and soffits and it doesn’t evaporate creating a healthy environment for algae/mold to grow.  We cleaned a roof this week that had sponges in the gutters. Not only were they ineffectual, but the sponge became a wonderful nursery for trees and weeds to grow. See how dark the wood is under the gutters? That was white last year!

Failed Gutter Sponges

When we got on the roof the clean out the gutters and remove the sponges, this is what we found: The sponges prevented the gutters from flushing the detritus.

So, after removing all the sponges and flushing out the gutters, we are able to perform roof cleaning! Not only that, but we cleaned the fascia too. All I can say to gutter guard companies is: keep it up! You are aiding our industry considerably.

Innovation has come to the pressure washing industry, at least in the commercial industry. Alcoa Architectural Products has developed  a coating of titanium dioxide that is built into the manufacturing process of Building materials. This coating allows the building to keep itself clean, on the outside! The science works like this:

1. Free Radicals Released: When sunlight strikes the titanium dioxide particles embedded in Alcoa’s EcoClean building panels, their electrons get charged. The energy is transferred to oxygen and water molecules in the air, forming free radicals.

2. Search and Destroy: The free radicals attack and oxidize organic pollutants on the panel and in the surrounding atmosphere, breaking them down into benign compounds.

3. Superslick Surface: Free radicals cling together on the EcoClean building panel, creating a slick surface that allows rainwater to wash off in sheets rather than form beads. As the water cascades off the building, dirt remaining on the panel is washed away.                                                                                                       ~Forbes, June 6, 2011 Todd Woody

Alcoa is working on buildings in North America and Europe with companies that are trying to increase their Green image. A self cleaning building that doesn’t require a pressure washing or a reclaim system means less work for exterior cleaning companies. It means a larger initial investment by building owners that will pay for itself in reduced cleaning costs and a friendlier image. Seems like a great idea to me – time to think outside the box everyone. Stagnation will be your defeat!

This past week was a busy one, we did a lot of roof cleaning, gutter whitening and even pressure washing here in Maryland and Delaware. Instead of talking about that, though – the follow words seem somehow more important. Next week, I promise to write a more relevant post about roof cleaning.

Our lives are not determined by

What happens to us,

But how we react to what happens;

Not by what life brings to us,

But by the attitude we bring to life.

A positive attitude causes a chain reaction

Of positive thoughts, events, and outcomes.

It is a catalyst….

A spark that creates extraordinary results!

What attitude do you choose?
